The Mustard Seed Venture is a group of people seeking to deeply understand, collectively experience and freely extend what the historical Jesus referred to as “the kingdom,” by following his teachings and by drawing inspiration from anywhere that we see the kingdom manifest. The main focus of our conversations will be on how to apply our understandings of what the historical Jesus and related kingdom teachings and experiences are all about, and on how to apply those ideas in our daily lives. We are seeking to experience and extend God’s love and care to our loved ones, strangers, and those that we might normally see as our enemies. Are you interested in this kind of journey? If so, why?
I've felt since I was a young person that Jesus held some unique key to the truth. This sense persisted and actually grew stronger once I left the church as a teen. I soon got into the Shroud of Turin and the Edgar Cayce readings (which have a central focus on Jesus), and then became a student of A Course in Miracles, which claims to be authored by Jesus through a human "scribe." A Course in Miracles has been my spiritual path and my career as well for the last thirty years. For the last 25 years I've had an avid interest in Jesus scholarship, as many of the findings of scholars about the historical Jesus seem to corroborate the Jesus I have come to believe in from the Course.
We envision a network that creates an experience of the kingdom, both in its content and conversations. We therefore ask that all posts have a respectful tone, and a kingdom-like posture towards others. A helpful rule of thumb is to keep in mind if we are referring to another person or members of another group or faith, we write the post as if they might at some point be reading it. What draws you to a desire to manifest Jesus’ teachings in this world, such as love, forgiveness, healthy relationships, community and helping others?
I think of a quote from the 1982 movie Gandhi, where one of his close followers, right before he is killed, offers this summary of his significance: "When we most needed it, he offered the world a way out of madness." That is how I think of Jesus, except that we always need it, and he forever offers it.
Please tell us a little general information about yourself, so we can begin to get to know you. What kind of work do you do? What are your interests?
My day job is teaching A Course in Miracles, which is also my spiritual path. I also have a longstanding passionate interest in the historical Jesus and am one of the founding members of the Mustard Seed Venture. My particular focus in relation to the historical Jesus is on trying to draw out the spiritual wisdom I see in his teachings. And I also am interested in the topic of meaningful coincidence, and have identified a particular form of coincidence that I call CMPEs (Conjunctions of Meaningfully Parallel Events), which I have written about and conducted a pilot study on.
